FRANCIS OF ASSISI CONVENT

Context

The community is located at Walajabad, a panchayat town in Kancheepuram District, about 66 kms from Chennai. The people of the locality are generally poor, deprived of good education and are economically backward.

History

In 1963, Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mathias, sdb, the then Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, invited the sisters to render their services to the people of the locality. This invitation was accepted by Mother Mary Francis, the then Superior General. Initially, a team of three sisters ventured to educate the local children and to share the Good News of Jesus with the people of the locality.

Mission

The sisters are mainly engaged in the education apostolate. The Primary School that had merely two teachers in the beginning has now grown to be a R.C.M. High School owing to dedicated efforts of the sisters over the years. In 1999, St. Joseph’s Matriculation School was established. Later, was constructed with the financial support of the Thomas Foundation, Netherlands. The sisters also take up various pastoral ministries in the parish .
