The convent is situated in Vellore, a town in North Arcot District. Vellore is historically known for different movements that spearheaded the independence of India. Muslims form a major part of the population in this town. The people are employed in leather factories, which is the main source of income for them.
In 1972, Rt. Rev. Dr. Anthony Muthu, the then Bishop of Vellore, invited our sisters to render service to the people of this locality. Mother Mary Francis, the then Superior General supported this initiative. Rev. Fr. Maria Lazar, the then Vicar General and Rev. Fr. Xavier generously denoted the Multipurpose Social Service Hall to the sisters to start their ministry.
Initially, Arockia Matha Dispensary was started to provide medical care to the sick and the poor. A Tailoring Institute was established to train the young girls to find gainful employment. Two of our sisters also work at the Diocesan Tamil Medium School. Later, Arockia Matha Matriculation School was started to impart knowledge of the poor children of this place. Arockia Matha Crèche was also started to take care of the tiny tots. The sisters are also involved in all the pastoral activities of the parish.
