The community is located at Thiruvottiyur, a coastal area in the northern part of Chennai. Thiruvottiyur has a diverse residential population due to the industrial units, trading activity and nearby fishing hamlets. The area is becoming overcrowded and surrounded with slums inhabited mostly by the poor and the downtrodden people.
In 1964 the sisters arrived at Thiruvottiyur to alleviate the poor people of the locality through the encouragement provided by Mother Mary Francis, the then Superior General. The mission began with five sisters who started teaching in the Diocesan Primary School and who also participated in the pastoral activities of the parish.
The sisters have been working hard for the poor of the locality since 1964. A Tailoring School was also run by the sisters to help poor young women who could not pursue their higher studies. In 1998, St. Louis Working Women’s Hostel was started to help working women find safe and secure accommodation. In 2010, St.Louis Technical Centre was also opened to impart computer literacy among the poor of the locality. In addition to their services in education, the sisters also cooperate in various pastoral activities of the parish.
