SACRED HEART CONVENT
Sacred Heart Convent, surrounded by green paddy fields, is located at Poonamallee, Chennai. The natural setting provides a prayerful atmosphere for the sisters to serve with zeal and enthusiasm. The residents of this locality generally belong to the lower middle class. The convent is surrounded by seminaries and religious houses at its neighbourhood.
The convent was erected in 1982 for the sisters who were working at the dispensary of Sacred Heart Seminary when
Mother Mary Metilda was the Superior General. Later, the ownership of the dispensary was given to the FSJ Congregation and it was shifted to Sacred Heart Novitiate campus. It was Fr. Vallogia, sdb, who supported the sisters to a large extent. With his encouraging presence and support, the convent, the Dispensary and the Tailoring Institute grew significantly. As a mark of gratitude to Fr. Vallogia, sdb, for his constant support and guidance to the congregation, the dispensary has been named after him as Fr. Vallogia Dispensary.
The sisters are mainly involved in health ministry and social work. The sisters also run St. Joseph’s Industrial School, which is recognised by the Government of Tamilnadu. This institute provides opportunities to learn tailoring for many underprivileged young women in and around Poonamallee in order to find gainful employment. The sisters are also involved in other pastoral ministries.
