THOMAS CONVENT

Context

The community is located in Pakala in Chittoor District,

Andhra Pradesh. The people at this place are poor, and a good portion of the people belongs to the lower and middle class of the society.

This place is not well developed.  

History 

In 1964, Rev. Fr. Thomas Kilakekara, the then parish priest of Pakala, with the consent of Rt. Rev. Dr. Aruliah, the then Bishop of Cuddapah invited the sisters to serve at the parish during the leadership of Mother Mary Francis, the Superior General. The sisters were staying in a small house until the convent was constructed in 1972. After their arrival, the diocese started the Tamil and English Medium Schools to educate the children of the locality.

Mission

In 1990, St. Thomas Home for Children was started by the diocese for girls. In 2004, a new convent building was constructed and blessed by Rt. Rev. Dr. M. D. Prakasam, the then Bishop of Cuddapah. The sisters render great service in eradicating illiteracy in around the parish through the Diocesan School. They also began a Tailoring Institute to help the young women of the village find jobs. The sisters are also engaged in a variety of pastoral activities of the parish.
