This community is located at Ennore, a coastal area in the northern part of Chennai. The basic occupation of the people is fishing. At present, some factories have come into existence and Ennore bears a look of a small industrial town.
The community was started in 1969 with the consent of
Most Rev. Dr. R. Arulappa, the then Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, through the initiative of Fr. George Kottaram, the then Parish Priest of
St. Joseph’s Church, Ennore and the support of Mother Mary Francis, the then Superior General. In 1970, an English Medium School was started with sixty children on roll.
The sisters are involved in education ministry. St. Joseph’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School has grown over the years and at present it has 1100 children on roll. This fulfilled the yearnings of the people of the coastal belt as well as of those working at the factory, who wanted to impart good education to their children. The sisters are also engaged in various pastoral activities.
