Avadi is a suburban town of Chennai. It provides a link to the City of Chennai as well as to other significant villages beyond Avadi. The people at this place mostly belong to the middle class and the upper middle class of the society. The people in and around Avadi have been gifted with different employment opportunities.
In 1985, an old tattered house was purchased to provide residence for the sisters who were teaching at the school. This effort was taken by Mother Mary Metilda, the then Superior General.
The house also served as a formation house for the postulants.
In 1999, the convent was designated as a Regional House with
Sr. Agnes Fernando as the Regional Superior. In 2005, the convent became the Provincialate with Sr. P. Susai Mary as the first Provincial Superior. Since the shifting of the Provincialate to Acharapakkam, this convent started to function as a separate community comprising of sisters working at St. Antony’s Middle School and I.H.M. Girl’s Hr. Sec. School
The sisters at Portiuncula devote themselves to the service of education, especially for the poor and the downtrodden. In addition to teaching, the sisters are also involved in various pastoral activities of the parish.
