Our sisters established a community at this place to serve the poor and the marginalised. This place is marked by hills and scenic beauty. It is unique because of the presence of the poor tribals. There is great scope for developing the standard of life of the poor people.

History

In 1964, Rt. Rev. Dr. David Marianayagam, the then Bishop of Vellore invited our sisters to work for the poor at Jolarpet.

The convent was named after him as St. David’s Convent as an expression of gratitude for his generosity and support.  This mission was started when Mother Mary Francis was the Superior General.

In 1985, the management of the girls’ section of R.C. Middle School was handed over by the Salesian Congregation to our sisters. Subsequently, in 1986 this school was divided into two sections.

The first section consists of St. Joseph’s Girls’ Primary School.

A new piece of land was bought for this school and a new school building was constructed in 2012. The second section consists of St. Joseph’s High School, which was upgraded as St. Joseph’s Girls Higher Secondary School in 1994. In the same year, a new school building was erected through the hard work of our sisters and the support of our benefactors from Indesch Patenchaften of Luxembourg. In 1997, St. Joseph’s Home for Children was started to reduce the number of dropouts among girl children.

In addition to this a Crèche was also started to take care of the children of the working women. Later, a Tailoring School was initiated to help the poor girls of the village to learn stitching and to find gainful employment.

The foundation stone for the new house was laid by Rt. Rev. Francis Carvalho, the then Auxiliary Bishop of Madras-Mylapore, on 1 November, 1965. The new house was named after Archbishop Louis Mathias, sdb, as a sign of gratitude for his support and guidance. Eventually, St. Louis Convent was blessed and opened by Most Rev. Dr. R. THOMAS HOSPITAL

Context

St. Thomas Hospital is located in close proximity to

the FSJ Generalate at St. Thomas Mount. The hospital extends healing ministry to the poor and the downtrodden in and around of St. Thomas Mount.

History

In 1972, Mother Mary Francis, the then Superior General envisioned to serve the sick and the downtrodden through appropriate health care services. Accordingly, a small dispensary was started with the support of Lt. Col. Dr. K.S George and Sr. Damien, who were the pioneers. Later, a land for the proposed hospital was gifted by

Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mathias, sdb, the then Archbishop of

Madras-Mylapore. Fr. Matthew Vetical, the then parish priest of

St. Patrick’s Church took strenuous efforts for the establishment of the hospital. In 1973, the first phase of the hospital was constructed

with the direction of Msgr. J. P. D’Souza and with the financial support of Misereor, Germany. In 1998, the Silver Jubilee of

St. Thomas Hospital was meaningfully celebrated with the theme: “Towards Holistic Health”. In the Jubilee Year, a new Intensive Medical Care Unit (ICU) was set up to offer better health care services. In 2009, the Modular Operation Theatre and the CT Scan Department was inaugurated by Thiru P. Paneerselvam, the Honourable Health Minister of the State of Tamilnadu. Today St. Thomas  Hospital is Multi Speciality Hospital which has a well equipped infrastructure.

Mission

The team of sisters, along with doctors, nurses and other staff devote themselves to giving personal and caring health services to the people, especially the poor, the downtrodden and the marginalised in the neighbourhood of St. Thomas Mount. It must be recognised with gratitude that the hospital is what it is today because of the dynamism, vision, untiring hard work, coupled together with prayers and simplicity of Dr. Sr. Rexline and the dedicated team of Sisters, Staff and Support Staff. In 1993, Out-Reach Programmes were taken up as a new initiative to promote health care and health education to people around the locality, particularly to the poor in the villages.

The hospital administration has established dispensaries in some villages in and around St. Thomas Mount. This is managed through the dedicated services of trained and skilled nurses. In order

to train nurses, the hospital started a Nursing School named after

St. Theresa of Child Jesus in 1993. This nursing school has trained

18 batches of students who work in various parts of the city and overseas. It is encouraging to note that special medical assistance is provided for the sisters of the congregation at the hospital and delicate attention is paid to the needs of the elderly sisters. Besides the administration of the Hospital in St Thomas Mount, a number of extension service programs have been carried out by the Hospital in several parts of the city and its outskirts.

In 2005, St. Francis of Assisi Home for Aged and St. Francis

of Assisi Tailoring Institute were opened in Sembarambakkam to take care of the elderly and to increase the employability of the deprived women of the locality. In 2005, Assisi Crèche was established in Nethaji Nagar to shelter and take care of those who are either orphans, semi-orphans or destitute with the financial assistance from

St. Thomas Hospital, donors and other benefactors. Today there are thirty children residing in the home and special attention is given for their integral development. In 2006, a New House with a Dispensary was opened at Acharapakkam to take care of the health-care needs of the poor and the farmers of the village. Moreover, a farmland was purchased to make it a centre of religious activity.

FSJ QUASQUICENTENNIAL RESIDENCE

Context

The residence accommodates the retired and ailing sisters of the congregation for their peaceful stay and recuperation. This place provides a serene atmosphere for the senior sisters to engage in prayer and contemplation after long years of committed service to the Lord and the congregation.

History

In 2004, during the 27th General Chapter, there was a proposal to construct a home for the retired and the ailing sisters and to take special care of their physical and spiritual well-being. The proposal was welcomed by all the members and it was suggested that the retired home be built within the Mother House campus itself.

Thus, the Quasquicentennial Residence was inaugurated with great joy and enthusiasm in 2011 by Mother Rita Catherine Michael,

the Superior General.

Mission

The community of senior sisters spend their time in prayer and rest and thus try to seek communion with God. These senior members are a constant inspiration to the younger sisters who visit them for guidance and blessings. The younger members are edified through their rich and varied experiences.

SACRED HEART TEACHER TRAINING

VANDAVASI

SACRED HEART TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTE

Context

The community is located in a main town in Thiruvannamalai District. The convent is situated amidst lush paddy fields and surrounded by number of villages populated by the downtrodden and the poor. The people are mostly poor and dependent on the agriculture for their day-to-day living.

History

Sacred Heart Teacher Training Institute was established

in 1994 as an extended mission of Sacred Heart Convent, Vandavasi to help girls to become self-sufficient and self-confident after their schooling. The effort to start this institute was inspired by the charism of the founder himself who envisioned the integral liberation

of girl children and women of the society. On a historical note, it must be said that the Teacher’s Training Institute became full-fledged with government approval after nine years of its inception. During the interim period, the Institute functioned as a Computer Education Centre for young girls of the locality. This effort was initiated

by Mother Mary Cyrilla the then the Superior General. In 2001

Sacred Heart Hostel Facility was established through the financial assistance of Thomas Foundation, Netherlands.

Mission

The sisters, equip young women with skills for teaching

and increase their employability through the course offered

in Sacred Heart Teacher’s Training Institute where many of our sisters were also trained. About hundred girls are educated every year and find government jobs at the end of their training. The sisters enrich their training by imparting to them sound value education.
